What’s the Hype About Epic Hyperdrive?

Our Epic journey began more than eight years ago and since then, we’ve never looked back. We continue to make Epic even better, to make it easier for you and better for our patients. In fact, we’re putting it into hyperdrive — Epic Hyperdrive, that is. Read on to learn more.

Epic Hyperdrive is a new and improved way to access and use Epic. It’s a specialized web browser, much like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, used exclusively to access a web-based version of Epic. While it should enhance productivity and enrich patient care, how you access Epic won’t change.

We launched Hyperdrive with approximately 100 “early adopters” on Monday, February 12. It expanded to everyone at HMB/HMCL on Sunday, March 10. These groups helped to ensure the new functionality works as intended by providing feedback before we roll it out systemwide on Sunday, April 21.

New features, functionality and changes

Hyperdrive makes Epic faster and more reliable for you, with new features and a more modern look and feel that improves existing workflows and navigation. Many screens have been refreshed, making it easier to find the information you need. For example, the general search bar will be under the Epic menu, though you’ll still be able to search the patient chart from Storyboard, just as you always have.

“Several of the changes with Hyperdrive make it easier to find and identify important patient information clinicians need,” said Lisa Stephenson, chief nursing informatics officer. “Along with some personalization features and better system reliability, these improvements should help improve the experience for all Epic users.”

Some other notable changes include:

  • Analytics Catalog replaces the Reports Library – The Analytics Catalog is your new home to find Reporting Workbench reports, SlicerDicer sessions and dashboards. View the Analytics Catalog tour.
  • Favorite Searches in Storyboard – Mark common Chart Search searches as favorites in Storyboard. Watch the Chart Search video.
  • Find recent searches in Storyboard – The Search field in Storyboard shows your five most recent patient information searches. Learn more.
  • Identify “My Patients” in searches – Use the My Patients checkbox in Patient Lookup to find patients that you’ve interacted with previously. Learn more.
  • Know patients’ statuses – You’ll be notified of patient status changes, such as when they’re in the waiting room. The notification will appear in Epic on your desktop, Haiku, Canto and Rover. Learn more.
  • Clean up the Problem List – Merge problems to keep the relevant information from each other while avoiding the clutter of duplicates. View tip sheet.

“We’re excited about the opportunities Hyperdrive brings for our clinicians and staff. Many of the changes simplify and streamline workflows, which should make the time spent in Epic more productive. This means providers and nurses will be able to focus more on patient care,” said Dr. Jordan Dale, chief medical information officer.

Positive responses about Epic Hyperdrive

About 100 early adopters started using Hyperdrive in February. Here’s some of the feedback received so far:

  • “I am very happy with the log in speed and the width of the Account Note section when adding a note.” HMH nurse.
  • “The system runs much faster, with no delay times. In addition, having the pop-outs in side-by-side options for tabs is great.” HM SPG/PCG accounts receivable.
  • “The speed for registering a patient is quicker now. Consents are quick to sign.” HMCL lead patient access services representative.
  • “I like the bright Patient Lookup box and the way it says “currently open” in the recently opened patients view when you have an MRN already open. I also like how Media Manager now provides more information, like all of the document names, so you don’t have to switch to the encounter or patient level before renaming or moving a document.” HMH RN.
