2022: Year in Review

In 2022, our patients and everyone at Houston Methodist increasingly embraced different technologies. As we roll into 2023, let’s review a few stats defining some of last year’s achievements.

MyChart: Managing health care more conveniently

Patients continued signing up for MyChart accounts to more conveniently manage their health care. In 2022, our patients scheduled more appointments, refilled more prescriptions and checked into more appointments electronically using MyChart.

Patients and providers also communicated important clinical information with each other. Through MyChart, patients received clinical results, completed patient questionnaires, entered clinical updates and received medical advice messages — all from their mobile devices and desktops.

Virtual Care: Supporting our hospitalized patients

We continued leveraging different technologies to support inpatient care, including Epic video visits, telephone consultations, virtual urgent care visits, telestroke consults and new to 2022 — telenursing.

KLAS Arch Collaborative Survey: Improving the Epic experience for better patient care

In 2022, HM participated in the KLAS Arch Collaborative survey for the first time. HM providers and clinicians were invited to complete the survey and tell us about their Epic experience — what’s working, what’s not working — to help improve Epic satisfaction and facilitate better patient care.

Community Connect: Leveraging our best-in-class Epic system

The number of Community Connect practices and provider also grew last year. HM’s Community Connect allows physician practices, who work with HM, to purchase our best-in-class Epic electronic health record (EHR) and practice management system to use in their practices.

Our top priority: Keeping patients safe

Epic doesn’t just improve efficiency; it improves patient safety. In 2022, HM completed its systemwide IV pump integration with Epic, supporting better patient outcomes and improved safety.

Last year, DoseEdge, a pharmacy workflow software that helps eliminate medication errors, diminish drug waste and improve productivity, also supported HM’s unparalleled safety reputation.

Microsoft Teams: Connecting with colleagues systemwide

Microsoft Teams continued to facilitate seamless communication and collaboration across our system, with more Team chats, calls and meetings held in 2022 than ever before.

Looking ahead

Our next Epic Update is Sunday, April 23. Epic Update Companions, our sole source for training, will be available for review beginning April 3. They contain new features, workflows and helpful tips. Check your email for April 23 Epic Update announcements.

What will the stats we collect in 2023 reveal? Whatever the numbers, they’re sure to add up to effective communication, meaningful engagement and unparalleled patient experiences.
